Here at Eduporium, we want to make this year’s Thanksgiving all about STEAM. Science, technology, engineering, art + design, and math: we are constantly reminded of the importance of these subjects for driving forward our nation’s economy. And it got us wondering: what does STEAM really mean for us?
This past Halloween, a few of us decided that it would be a good idea to use Bare Conductive’s Touch Board and make something spooky. We really didn’t know what we wanted to make—we just kind of threw our hands up in the air and said: “let’s just go with it.” Over the next few hours, we scrambled around the office, gathering LED lights and circuit stickers and spare cardboard boxes. What we eventually came up with was not at all impressive; our final product was pretty much just a bunch of crude paintings of ghosts and witches on a cardboard box. But the witch screamed when you touched it, the eyes on the jack-o-lantern lit up, and everyone involved had a ton of fun. Along the way, we also learned to program a little bit and figured out how the Electric Paint really works.
This sense of discovery, collaboration, and excitement is what we think STEAM is all about. You’ve heard over and over again how these subjects are essential for pushing innovation. What they don’t always tell you, though, is how much fun STEAM can be. We’ve seen kids whoop with delight when they get their Arduino-powered robot up and running, or giggle uncontrollably as they splatter Electric Paint over a canvas. There’s nothing quite like that feeling of fulfillment when you create something that you can call your own. It makes all those hours crunching numbers, devising code, or designing prototypes completely worth it. And kids know this—that’s why STEAM can be so enjoyable.
