The MakeDo system is typically found in these small and simple cardboard construction kits with plastic tools kids can use to design and build real structures.

1. The MakeDo system can inspire creative play, critical thinking, and problem solving in kids.
2. Students can leverage a variety of reusable tools and readily available recycled cardboard.
3. The safe, sturdy, and handy MakeDo tools include plastic saws, screwdrivers, and screws.
4. Children can manipulate various pieces of cardboard by adding safe holes, cuts, and folds.
5. If possible, they can also create their own MakeDo construction pieces using a 3D printer.

The MakeDo tools

The MakeDo kits help make cardboard construction in makerspaces or classrooms simple with reusable plastic tools that are safe, sturdy, and handy. There is a plastic saw, screwdriver, and different sized screws available as part of the MakeDo line. The safe-saw has separate edges for cutting thick and thin cardboard and a hole puncher for piercing holes for scru’s. The scrudriver is a simple tool that kids could use to screw the scru’s into up to three layers of cardboard and the scru XL is for use with up to six layers of cardboard!

The materials in the kit

Cardboard is truly a perfect material for creative construction in school makerspaces due to this strength, versatility, and accessibility. It's easy to find, manage, and manipulate with holes, cuts, and folds, yet still gives authentic form to student creations. You'll find this almost anywhere in schools and is great for the environment (and budget) because it's recyclable and reusable.

Extension opportunities

If kids want to get creative and extend the possibilities, there’s an opportunity for that as well. They could design plastic tools or pieces to add to their creation using a 3D printer. You can also find some free, pre-designed parts, including a hinge, angle bracket, mini tool, and scru-bit. These allow kids to replicate the swinging movement of doors, windows, bridges and more, and to secure fixed angles in their creations.
