There are few toys more iconic than the dollhouse. Almost every little girl has one and it’s easily always been one of the most popular products out there. Roominate is a dollhouse, but what sets it apart is its modern twist. Users can customize it however they want and learn a thing or two about circuitry in the process. With this added technological component, Roominate is both fun and educational for young girls who are interested in STEM.
I got my hands on a Roominate kit and the first thing I noticed was a bunch of different pieces that I assumed could somehow fit together. Design ideas started rushing through my head, so I got started with building the walls of the house, which was easy since the walls and the floor are provided in the Chateau Kit. I noticed the creativity flowing from my brain to my hands and ending up brought to life with my design, so, to keep from wasting it, I cut up some paper to act as wallpaper, carpet, windows, and curtains.
The box also contains motors similar to the ones found in toy cars. Trying to decide where to fit this cool gadget in, I created a makeshift fan and a small carousel—because every house needs that! Unfortunately, my maker curiosity got a bit too big for the Chateau Kit and with more ideas in my mind, I realized I'd need the separately sold Studio Kit. I also wasn’t able to actually light up the dollhouse because the bulbs are not included.
One thing I was able to conclude for certain is that the possibilities are endless and Roominate is an excellent opportunity to experiment with different objects and how to control them using basic circuitry and engineering. It's also great for inspiring young girls to pursue STEM and grow up to become part of the increasing contingent of women in STEM.
I learned about basic circuitry and how to properly build foundations so that the house doesn’t fall over as its occupants move about. It’s a tricky thing building something out of plastic, trying to fit a wired motor inside and stabilizing the entire thing, but it was a good challenge to undertake and an exciting way to spend an afternoon!
The best thing about Roominate is that it reinforces the idea, especially to little girls, that it’s a good thing to be an engineer and to be technologically proficient. Hopefully, it will continue to inspire more young women to get involved with STEM and pursue careers in the science fields.
