Want to make the next big hit? Kits can do that with ease using the DIY Synth Kit from Technology Will Save Us! With the Synth Kit, students 12 and up can design and build a real musical instrument and tinker to create awesome electronic sounds. The kit lets them plug various components into the breadboard and experiment with a wide array of sound creations. Through the building process, students will learn about circuits, electrical components, and how electricity turns into sounds. They’ll even experiment with frequency, pitch, and volume and discover how they transform sound with simple technology!
The kit has three synths in one: a basic synth, a synth used in dub music, and a synth that sounds like Atari console games. Students can even reinvent their creations by pulling it apart and reconfiguring based on their preferences. Teachers and parents can challenge students to get inventive and use their imagination to customize circuits, add resistors, or pair it with an Arduino to create cool electronic noises!
At first, I was intimidated by the breadboard technology, but soon I realized that the graphical instructions included in the box were simple and easy to follow, guiding me towards building my first musical instrument from scratch. I didn’t even need any outside tools because everything is included in the box. During the building process, I learned what a synth is as well as how it works. I refreshed my circuitry and frequency knowledge as I wired the breadboard and controlled and set the volume and pitch on my circuit with ease.
The noises coming from my machine sure were funky, but I soon got the hang of mastering the controls and perfecting my music making. Although I didn’t make an actual song, I had lots of fun experimenting with the unique sounds coming from my self-constructed instrument. At the end, I even got to make my synth portable by placing it in the box it came in!
I can only imagine how much fun students will have with this kit and the confidence and satisfaction that will come from the construction process. With their newly crafted music maker, students will sure to be inspired to not only create electronic music, but also hack their synth to change the sound in any way they want. By focusing on providing accessible products that relate to everyday hobbies, like listening to music, Tech Will Save Us demystifies the electronic music-making process for kids—and adults like me!
